かりたてる【駆り立てる･狩り立てる】

1 〔猟銃で獲物を; 逃亡犯などを〕 flush [drive, beat] out 《a hare》; (茂みをたたいて) flush [drive, beat] out 《a fox》.

●駆り立てる人 〔勢子(_せこ)〕 a beater

・猟犬がウサギを駆り立てる 《when》 a hunting dog flushes out a rabbit.

2 〔じっとしていられない気持ちに追い込む〕 push [drive, pressure] sb to [into]…; impel.

●恐怖に駆り立てられる be impelled by terror.

●当時の軍国主義の風潮が若者たちを戦争に駆り立てた. The imperialist trends of the times impelled [pushed, drove] young people into the war.

・月面着陸成功のニュースは少年の心を宇宙へと駆り立てた. News of the successful moon landing impelled the boy's heart into space.
